What is solidarity?
Central to the ethos of Emmaus Communities is the concept of solidarity.

Solidarity takes many forms within Emmaus Communities; sometimes surplus income generated from the business of the Community goes towards starting new Emmaus Communities, sometimes it is donated to other local charities or to disaster appeals.

The concept of Solidarity is perhaps best embodied in Abbe Pierre’s own words: “Serve first those who suffer most".

Emmaus Brighton & Hove works with many individuals, local groups and organisations, helping out in different ways; supplying furniture, clothing and other goods, giving money to support specific projects, or by sharing skills and knowledge.
As one of the oldest UK Communities, Emmaus Brighton and Hove is frequently asked to give guided tours to prospective supporters of other Communities. We also host new Community Leaders and Assistants for short stays as part of their training.

Companions from Brighton have given support to new fledgling Communities in the UK, giving valued assistance to their Management teams and to new Companions.

We have also pledged to give money each year to the Emmaus UK Development Fund to help new and struggling communities.
