Love meeting and talking to new people, love history?

We are looking for volunteers to help us to engage with the hundreds of customers & visitors who arrive here at Emmaus Brighton & Hove each day.

Next year we celebrate our 20th anniversary and as part of our plans, we are looking at ways that we can raise our profile and share our stories.

We have four busy shops and a café all on one site in Portslade, which is home to our 47 Companions and set in 5 acres of beautiful grounds, which are steeped in history.

Summary of tasks:

  • Meeting & greeting our customers & visitors (you will be based in either in the  Secondhand superstore or the Bed room store in the old Chapel)
  • Helping to guide our visitors around the site, including advising on the best routes
  • Asking our visitors about the purpose of their visit and how they found out about us
  • Feeding back comments and suggestions 
  • Informing our visitors about Emmaus Brighton & Hove, who we are and what we do
  • Sharing the history of Emmaus, from the early days in France to the present day
  • Informing  visitors about our solidarity work (or how we help others)
  • Sharing information about the history of our buildings and beautiful site
  • Informing our visitors of upcoming events and special sales taking place at Emmaus Brighton and at Emmaus by the sea…
  • Explaining  what Gift Aid is in relation to donated good
  • Answering questions on what we collect and sell in our shops
  • Handing out information leaflets

Skills required:

  • Love helping, meeting and talking to new people
  • Interest in history
  • Ability to work on their own and within a team

Time commitment:

We are looking for volunteers that can commit to a morning or afternoon session.


  • As an Emmaus  Brighton volunteer you will be given a full induction
  • We will keep you informed on the various topics highlighted here, such as the History of Emmaus, History of Emmaus Brighton & Hove, our solidarity work etc 
  • We provide training in Health & Safety
  • We offer an opportunity to develop your skills and experience
  • We will pay for volunteer travel expenses
  • We will provide you with lunch if you volunteer four or more hours
