Emmaus second hand superstore

Foredown tower astronomers
We meet at Revive@emmaus their new cafe & tearoom on the third Thursday every month at 7 p.m. for 7.30.

Many readers of this newsletter probably saw us for the first time when we participated in the Emmaus “Open Day” in June last year and we will be at the Emmaus Open Day on June 25th this year. Our President (the “fictional visitor” from outer space has been invited to attend). He attended last year and became very friendly with the General Manager of Emmaus.

This year (weather permitting) we are hoping to introduce visitors to our nearest star (the Sun). There will be a demonstration (which visitors will be able to part) of how the Moon keeps the same side facing the Earth although it is rotating. We hope to be able to answer any questions about astronomy that you might have.

Our meeting in the Restaurant on the June 16th will be about the Sun when Mike Frost, a lecturer from Rugby, is coming to explain what causes of the “Green Flash”. The day before our meeting there will be a Total Eclipse of the Moon caused by the Moon passing through the shadow of the Earth. The Moon will be opposite the Sun with the Earth in a direct line. The Sun will be setting in the west so watch for the Moon in the east. Keep looking at the Moon from 9pm.

More information about us: - We are an astronomy group that welcomes everyone. Emmaus has within its grounds some “dark sites” that makes it possible for us to use telescopes on our meeting nights (weather permitting) and if you have never seen the Moon through a powerful telescope come along. Even if the weather is poor there will be something of interest at our meetings. We might have a visiting speaker or one of our members might present a talk. We will also explain what is visible in the night sky for the coming month.

You can join Foredown Tower Astronomers for a half-year fee of £15 or attend our meetings as a visitor for £3 each meeting. By coming along you are not only supporting us, you are also helping Emmaus as we make a donation to Emmaus for the use of the cafe.”
