What is happening to the Holm Oak outside our shop

Our lovely Holm Oak has been a major feature of the grounds for many years. Believed to have been planted approximately 150 years ago, it has provided a shady retreat at the entrance to the Emmaus shop.

In June 2008 during a severe storm, one of the main limbs fell to the ground. We called in a tree surgeon to give advice. He informed us that the tree trunk had suffered lightning damage many years ago and as a result, rot and decay started to form. This has now reached such an extent that the tree is now unsafe. There is a very strong possibility that further limbs will fall and the tree is very definitely in a state of decline.

We invited Brighton & Hove City Council tree specialist on site who verified the situation. With their approval we informed the Council of our intention to take the tree down. It has been agreed that we leave the tree trunk where it stands as it will provide a perfect habitat for wildlife.

Emmaus is very happy to have teamed up with Plumpton College who carried out the work. Students from Plumpton College will continue to work with Emmaus in the coming months as there are many other trees in our grounds which are in need of remedial work.

Emmaus Brighton Open Day on 28th June

Emmaus Brighton launches 'Goodwill Co-op'

On 21st May we launched our Goodwill Co-op. One of the aims of the Goodwill Co-op is that the crafts should all be made by re-using and recycling unwanted materials. Suggested ideas are woodwork, painting, pottery, quilting, paper mache and knitting, but donations in any medium would be welcome. Goodwill Coop Newsletter 1

East Hill Park Healthwalk

Meet at the Emmaus Chapel Shop front door EVERY WEDNESDAY at 12.30pm for some FREE exercise. The 1 to 1.5 mile circular lunchtime walk is led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders and is relaxed, friendly and a great way to get some gentle but effective exercise and still get back in time for lunch. Bring cash for a drink or lunch in the Emmaus cafe at the end of the walk. Get Active! Make new friends! Get out in the fresh air! We are on the 1 and 1A bus routes. Walkers please do not park in the Emmaus car park. If coming by car there is free parking in Manor Road then walk through the gate to the chapel shop entrance.

Our Solidarity Sale in May
