Emmaus Brighton Companion wins Adult Learner of the Year Award from Brighton & Hove City Council

Congratulations to one of our Companions on winning Adult Learner of the Year Award from Brighton & Hove City Council. The presentation in May 2008 was in Hove Town Hall in Adult Learners Week.

Companion wins job with Brighton & Hove buses

Congratulations to one of our Companions who has been appointed a full-time driver with Brighton & Hove Bus Company. Before that he was driving one of our Emmaus vans around Brighton.

Visitors

Emmaus Brighton welcomed Councillor Carol Theobald - Mayor of Brighton, Hugh Burnett - High Sheriff of East Sussex and Robert Lacey - Chair of East Sussex County Council on 6th May 2008. They were given a tour and chatted to trustees, Companions, staff and volunteers.

We welcomed James Brathwaite CBE, chairman of SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) on 21st February 2008. Accompanied by Alison Marsh of SEEDA he met trustees, staff and Companions.

Emmaus Brighton in the Brighton Festival Fringe

We were delighted to be part of the Brighton Festival Fringe which ran from 3 - 26 May 2008. We hosted an art exhibition in our café with mixed works from local groups and artists.

Emmaus Brighton on Meridian TV news

Meridian TV filmed in the Emmaus Brighton community and broadcast their programme on 26th May. They had previously visited the community on 31st January 2008 and broadcast their film on Meridian TV news the same evening.

Graeme, one of our Companions, was interviewed live as one of the guests in the studio on the BBC radio 4 programme 'Midweek' on 30th January 2008.

Emmaus Day

All monies raised through our main shop on 8th September 2007 were given as an act of solidarity towards the start up of a new Emmaus community in Hastings & Rother. 'Emmaus Hastings & Rother' is currently what we call an Emmaus 'group' and its trustees are currently searching for a site there to establish a residential Emmaus community and recycling business.

2007 Visits

No Smoking

On 1st July 2007 a government ban came into force on smoking in enclosed places. This means no smoking anywhere in our buildings except bedrooms. Smoking is not allowed in our shops or café and not within 5 metres of any entrance.

Abbé Pierre, founder of Emmaus, dies

Emmaus founder Abbé Pierre

The founder of the worldwide Emmaus movement died on 22nd January 2007 in hospital in Paris. He was aged 94.

The funeral Mass took place in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Friday 26th January.

After the mass, Abbe Pierre was buried at Esteville, in Normandy, northern France. His close friends and relatives and a few representatives of the Emmaus movement attended his burial. His grave is next to the graves of Lucie Coutaz, co-founder of Emmaus, together with Georges and the other first Companions of Emmaus.

We have signed a new three year contract from April 2006 with Brighton & Hove council who have told us they are pleased to confirm that Emmaus has met the five criteria necessary to achieve Supporting People Accreditation:
