Solidarity - caring for others less fortunate than us - is one of the main objectives of Emmaus and our Community is active locally, nationally and internationally.
Mathieu our Community Leader writes:
When the first Emmaus Community in Neuilly-Plaissance slowly started to do more than break even, the Companions asked Abbe Pierre if they could have a bigger allowance, a new van, etc., he answered, “That’s not what we’re here for, when we have a roof over our heads, when our bellies are full, then our first thought must be for those worse off than ourselves”.
This story, often told, is one we must constantly remind ourselves of, as it is central to the ethos of Emmaus. We are not a hostel, nor do we live on handouts. We work for our living and with any surplus we generate: we help those in greater need.
In Brighton we have a solidarity group which meets regularly and is open to all members of our Community to join and get involved with.
