The history of Emmaus
Emmaus started in France shortly after the Second World War, when homelessness was a big issue. The first Emmaus Community was founded in Paris, in 1949 and the first companion was called Georges, who had attempted suicide after leaving prison with nowhere to go. Georges was not just offered a home, but a purpose helping to build houses for homeless mothers.
In 1954, the Emmaus founder made an appeal to the French public following the death of a homeless woman on the streets. The radio appeal prompted an outpouring of support and Emmaus communities began opening across the country. This became known as the Uprising of Kindness.
The movement soon spread outside of France, with Emmaus communities opening across the world. Today, there are over 400 Emmaus groups in 41 countries.
