Volunteer FAQ'S
What is the process of becoming a volunteer with Emmaus?
Once you have filled in your application form, you’ll be invited for an informal chat, a tour of the site (and a cup of tea!) If you decide to proceed with volunteering, we carry out certain checks to ensure the safety of our companions, staff and volunteers. We ask for two references (this could be an employer, teacher, colleague or neighbour).
All volunteers, staff and trustees are required to undertake a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which is free of charge and filled in online. Disclosing a conviction will not necessarily exclude you from becoming an Emmaus volunteer, however we may discuss this with you before you begin volunteering.
Please note, if you already have a DBS we still require a check specific to Emmaus.
Once your DBS has been approved and your ID verified, we can agree a start date and begin your volunteering journey.
How much time will I need to contribute?
Your donated time is a gift, and volunteering at Emmaus Sussex can be very flexible. Many people prefer to offer a specific day and number of hours to help plan around busy lives, but shifts can occur anytime during our opening hours of 9.30am – 5pm from Tuesday to Saturday. If it’s a few hours a week or several afternoons a month, it all helps our social enterprise to thrive.
Can I claim travel expenses?
Yes, we can reimburse travel expenses for local bus/train fare or petrol costs which can be discussed when you start volunteering.
Can I volunteer in more than one role?
Yes! Lots of our volunteers help in more than one area of our organisation, whilst others focus on one specific role. We also rely on volunteers helping at our hugely popular, busy seasonal fairs held three times a year.
Is there an age minimum?
The minimum volunteer age at Emmaus is 18 years old.
Will there be any training?
You will receive a full induction which includes Health & Safety training and ongoing support from your relevant manager, companions, fellow volunteers and our volunteer coordinator. Further training may be available for you to develop skills if applicable.
