Queen's Green Canopy

On Wednesday we planted our new hazel tree, from the Queen's Green Canopy “Tree of Trees” which stood tall as a message of hope, regeneration and optimism to the nation and the world as part of the Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrations.

Emmaus Brighton & Hove joins over 300 organisations from across the UK who were announced by the QGC as recipients of these special trees in The Queen’s name, which are gifted in a pot embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher.

Presented by Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex Andrew Blackman the Hazel tree was planted during a special ceremony at our community. Also in attendance was Vice Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex Sara Stonor, the High Sherrif of East Sussex, Jane King and former Mayor of Brighton & Hove Councillor Alan Robbins.

In a speech given after the planting ceremony, The Lord-Lieutenant said: “It’s really wonderful to be back here, it’s such a fabulous place and what you do here is extraordinary and just so valuable. Her Majesty’s entire life was of course given to service and again I think that’s so appropriate for this place, because what you do here is serve your neighbours, serve your community, serve your city. Everything about this place fits in with the ethos that Her Majesty The Queen was so much a beacon of. I really can’t think of a better place for one of her trees to be planted. As the tree grows and thrives, and every time we come here and see it, we’ll be reminded of so many different aspects of Her Majesty’s life.”

In keeping with our ongoing mission to be sustainable and eco-friendly, the tree was planted using compost from our own composter. We are so grateful to be honoured in this very special way.
